August 2011 Corvette of the Month

JOHN & CAROL KLUNDER

Corvette: 1965 CUSTOM ORANGE AND YELLOW STINGRAY CONVERTIBLE

Is this your first Corvette?
Yes , WE ARE CORVETTE VIRGINS!

What first attracted you to Corvettes?
THEY WERE THE HOTTEST CARS AT THE DRAGSTRIP ON LONG ISLAND
IN THE MID SIXTIES.

How did you come to acquire this Corvette?
In 1974 we were actually looking for a van or other vehicle for Carol to drive to work when we came across the ad for the Vette in the SacBee. It went something like: “ ’65 Corvette Stingray convertible, Rex Hutchison racing engine, 4 wheel disc brakes, factory air, factory sidepipes, power windows, hard top, mags, radial TAs, minor body damage, $1500.” I asked Carol to read the price to me to be sure of what I saw, and she verified it. I asked her if she wanted a Corvette to drive to work instead of a van, and she said to take a look at it first. I went with $1500 cash in my pocket. The minor body damage was a smashed right front fender which wasn’t too bad.

What modifications, if any, have you done to this car?
The most noticeable is the built-in headlights. We also molded in some splash guards on the wheel openings, and built a little “ducktail” spoiler on the back end. We’ve gone through the interior with new carpet and upholstery. We did the lacquer paint ourselves in the mid 70s. We made some minor engine mods to the Rex Hutchison engine to make it more streetable. Last year we finally got rid of the cinderblocks we were driving on and put new chrome Rallye wheels and Toyo Radials.

What modifications, if any, do you have planned for this car?
A new unleaded gas motor, maybe some body work and new paint.

What do you like best about Corvettes?
Their great looks, outstanding performance and unequalled handling.

How long have you been members of RCCC?
Seven years.

What offices have you held or runs you've put on?
John has been the Corvette of the Month Photographer for the last year as well as the Jokester,
And both have been doing the Club nametags.

What do you like about RCCC?
The many wonderful friendships we’ve made as well as the
great social atmosphere along with the many parties and events that happen during the year.

What other interesting facts might others enjoy knowing about you?
We were members of “Corvette Owners Club of Sacramento” before the “split” occurred in 1977. A group of COCS members decided that they wanted to party rather than race and joined with some like minded folks from Central Valley Corvettes to form RIVER CITY CORVETTE CLUB. We’ve had a casual relationship over the last three decades with a few RCCC members and decided seven years ago to make the move from COCS to RCCC which turned out to be a great move. Carol is the Owner of “Cinderella’s House Magic” which started out as a housecleaning business in 1978 and with my participation has been a full-service remodeling company. Carol also is the maker and marketer of some of the best jams and jellies you have ever eaten along with a variety of home canned specialties! John is semi-retired and the owner of John Klunder Photography providing most photographic services to the general public, but specializing in Fine Art and decorative photography. He has also developed a real interest in ceramics and is attending classes at Sierra College to pursue that end.
