Wayne and Bess Turrell's 1981 Ice Box White Coupe

Name: Wayne and Bess Turrell

Current Corvette: 1981 Ice Box White Coupe

Previous Corvettes: None.

What first attracted you to Corvettes? When was that or how old were you? I (Wayne) have the dubious distinction of hitting in 1954 one of the first Corvettes (1954 white with red interior) with my parents 1953 four door Dodge in Essex Fels, NJ. The rear end cracked like a tea cup. My brother had a 1958 white with a red interior Vette when we lived in Florida.

How did you come to acquire this Corvette? I saw a 1981 Vette in a used car show room on Riverside Ave in Roseville in 1995. It was Icebox White with a red interior. All Corvettes are red!
What modifications have you done to this car? The Vette is a 383 stroker with nitrous! It has VBP suspension grand tour system, rack and pinion steering, 350 turbo automatic transmission with twin coolers mounted under the headlights, Flo Master exhaust, 650 CFM Edlebrock carb, and disc brakes.

Modifications Planned: We want to do some more engine work and chroming and a new Ice Box white paint job.

What do you like best about Corvettes? I know this is a clinché but the Vette is an American icon and I like being part of that feel-good feeling!

How long have you been a member of RCC? Since 1995.

What offices have you held or runs you've put on? Held no offices; however, I have put on 3 Bodega Bay runs. I have also been the "last car" car on a number of runs.

What do you like about RCC? Meeting the people with the same interest in cars, trucks, motorcycles and family and a love for our country and the same values.

Other Facts: We enjoy traveling, gardening, cooking and eating healthy foods. We go every year to the ocean to refresh our bodies and souls—either to the east or west coast of the United States. Not forgetting the wine country every year as well.

The first time I (Bess) drove the Corvette was to go grocery shopping for breakfast one weekend. I tried to start the car and couldn't get it started. I noticed the men in the parking lot looking at me and thinking "that dumb blond." Finally after many tries it started and I drove home. Of course, I had to call my husband to get instrucytions on how to get it started. Lucky for me I didn't have to use the AAA.

Wayne is retired from the US Air Force with 20 years of service. Wayne and Bess have been married 47 years and they have three sons.
